PROGRESS REPORT (5/15)

Lab.work 2009. 5. 15. 19:39
■ THIS WEEK - WHAT I DID

Personal schedule
AI final test was on wednesday.

SigMP seminar
In-Network Cache Coherence (MICRO 2006)
Managing Distributed, Shared L2 Caches through OS-Level Page Allocation (MICRO 2006)

Background research
① Imagine
In the future, there will be robots all around, and the robots will be very small, mobile, portable, and self-communicative to each other.
There are many researches about these robots. What impressed me is Tiny-robots which can form self-assembled 3-D structure. (http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~claytronics/) We also can imagine that 3-D fax machine can be actualized by using those tiny-robots.

② Problems or Limitation
Most of the current robotics problem requires parallel processing, modularity, and message-passing between sub machines on the network. Especially for tiny robots, power consumption will be the first problem, and also need to be robust. There are some robust methods for static and structured environments, but mapping unstructured, dynamic, or large-scale environments remains largely an open research problem.
Other issue can be real-time control. Thousands of algorithms run in background of robot running, parallel/multicore will be needed for fast reaction. And it needs to be achieved with in a small area limitation. Even with a huge robot, every part of a robot will consist of tiny robots, and the degrees of freedom in a robot can increase with the quality of the microcontrollers of each part.

③ Other Issues
I researched using internet and some papers from robotics lab.
but It is so hard to convert those problems to H/W problem. Need your help!

And..
While researching the background,
I felt that I really need to work on the things like current main flow of computer architecture, what other people did and do now, and so on.
I will study on my own but I want to ask you to help me choosing papers to read.
Could you recommend papers every week or every other week? It will be a big help for me :)

■ NEXT WEEK - WHAT TO DO

Personal schedule
Computer Architecture Final test on Tuesday
Algorithm final test on Wednesday
Computer Aichetecture Project due to Saturday

No SigMP seminar on this week.

and on the occation of Teachers' Day,
I want to say thank you :D

See you next week.
